Adidas last Friday signed Malaysian star Lee Chong Wei a lifetime deal, NBC’s Steve Mitchel reports.
The contract is the largest single deal for the Badminton player which is also the first time Adidas has officially signed a lifetime deal with any sportsman.
The 33 year old is reportedly expected to earn as much as $20 million annually.
SportsOneSource reports that Lee Chong will have his own signature shoe line with Adidas and is expected to wear them for all his events. Forbes magazine predicts an annual sale of over $26 million from his customised apparel annually.
Lee Chong Wei is triple silver medalist at the Olympic Games, and the sixth Malaysian to win an Olympic medal. He won his first silver medal in 2008, also the first time a Malaysian had reached the finals in the men’s singles event. This achievement earned him the title Dato’, and led to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak describing him as a national hero.
He repeated the achievement twice more in 2012 and 2016, thus making him the most successful Malaysian Olympian in history.
