Founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Jerry John Rawlings was conspicuously missing at the party’s 2016 manifesto launch in Sunyani on Saturday, September 17.
No reason whatsoever was given for the absence of Ghana’s longest-serving head of state at his party’s event. Speaker after speaker would not disclose or acknowledge the absence of the former President at the event.
However, it has been confirmed that, President Rawlings was dully invited for both the manifesto highlights and lunching but declined to honor both invitations because the NDC rejected his advise not waste resources organizing flamboyant events at the expense of the ordinary hungry people. His advise to combine both the campaign and manifesto lunch since the elections was closer was shot down by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah the General Secretary.
In order to save the NDC of imminent collapse, Mr. Rawlings agreed to attend the campaign lunch but declined to be part of what he termed as betrayal of the values of the party he founded.
Mr. Rawlings has also declined to be part of the core campaign team of the NDC in this year’s general elections.
